Designing a Family of Air Purifiers in 9 Months
From a blank slate to an award-winning, best-selling product line in under a year.
I led the design of four air purifiers in just nine months—starting with no concept, no form, and no differentiator in a highly competitive category. Working in a nonstop 24-hour cycle across Boston, London, and China, I collaborated daily with global engineering teams to design, test, and refine every detail.
Each night, I handed off my work to the team in China, who quickly uncovered technical challenges. Their findings were then passed to the UK team, who proposed mechanical solutions overnight. By morning, I adapted the design to align with these constraints—balancing tooling, airflow performance, cost, and CMF—while coordinating with marketing, product development, and consumer insights to ensure the product story resonated and margins stayed healthy.
Every week, I personally presented our progress to the CEO and executive leadership—pitching concepts, defending design rationale, and aligning on how to deliver stronger user experience, tighter cost targets, and more compelling form.
The result: a product line that won Architectural Digest’s Great Design Award, became an Amazon Best Seller, and earned a spot on Amazon’s Movers & Shakers list. Technically advanced, intuitively designed, and competitively priced—these purifiers prove what’s possible with speed, clarity, and cross-functional alignment.
Shark Air Purifier 3-in-1
A compact, all-season solution that quietly purifies the air—whether heating, cooling, or simply circulating.
This 3-in-1 device combines a True HEPA air purifier, a space heater, and a fan into a single, cohesive form. Unlike seasonal appliances that are stored away half the year, this product is designed to live in the home year-round—visually quiet, spatially efficient, and always improving air quality.
The core design challenge was cost. To succeed, this needed to be more affordable than buying three separate appliances without compromising performance or aesthetics. It also had to be as compact as possible—minimizing footprint while maximizing perceived value and daily usefulness.
To explore how real light would interact with the scalloped detail wrapping the circumference, I quickly 3D printed a series of small-scale form studies. These physical prototypes allowed me to evaluate how shadow and highlight played across the geometry under natural and directional light.
The depth of each scallop was carefully constrained. Cutting too deeply into the cylindrical body would restrict airflow—compromising the purifier’s performance. On the other hand, increasing the overall product size to accommodate deeper cuts would impact cost, margins, and perceived bulk. These studies helped strike a balance between visual richness and functional efficiency.

Dynamic Air Quality Interface
A segmented display communicates real-time air quality with a numeric readout from 0% to 100%—100% representing fully purified air. A surrounding light ring reinforces this data at a glance: blue for clean, amber for fair, and red for poor or hazardous conditions. The system actively monitors air quality and intelligently adjusts fan speed—lowering for quiet, efficient operation or increasing to rapidly clear pollutants when needed.
The design is carefully tuned to express the strength of a high-performance air purifier while maintaining the quiet restraint needed to live comfortably in the home. Standing apart from the sea of cylindrical competitors—a form driven by impeller efficiency—it uses a more architectural silhouette to establish a unique presence. A bold UI and ambient light ring provide clear, far-read feedback, signaling not just air quality, but the intelligence of a system that adapts in real time.
